The diet thats taken social media by storm.
So hot right now it's probably been all over your Facebook and Instagram feed for quite a while now right?
What is it? How do you do it? Is there bad and good versions? Here are the answers to these 3 common Keto questions.
What is it?
Human metabolism and your cellular energy (a series of complex biochemical processes that keep the body functioning and provide you energy - i've horribly simplified 'metabolism' here) can primarily run on either glucose which you get from consuming carbohydrates or run on ketones which your body produces when reducing overall carbs and adding in healthy fats.
The reason you've seen those dramatic before and after keto pics on your social media is because once you reduce your carbohydrate intake your body starts using your stored glucose for energy which is known as glycogen. Your fat cells are filled with glycogen - that's one of their basic functions. Glycogen storage = fat cells. So, once you reduce overall carbohydrate consumption your body starts to use your stored glycogen for energy and therefore reducing your overall fat percentage.
After this process your body starts producing more and more ketones to be the new primary fuel source for energy and this is when you enter Ketosis. Burning fat for energy to put it simply instead of crabs. That’s the basis of what ketosis is.
How do you do it?
Via clinical supervision ONLY. The amount of people I have met who are not doing the keto diet supervised is astounding. It's only once they meet me and I tell them the whole picture they get surprised & concerned. People think “it's just food” and don't really make a link between diet and health - the link is a direct link - there's simply no debate about it. A direct impact on short term and long term health. That I can guarantee you.
Having said that, when you do start the ketosis journey you must supplement with activated vitamins and minerals (this is where I come in handy even more so) because your removing entire food groups - so, where are you going to replace and replenish daily needs of vital nutrients and chemicals such as antioxidants? Exactly - supplementation with the right prescriptions (without them it can & often does result in serious negative health consequences), diet and lifestyle are vital for a healthy ketosis journey & a healthy functioning person! Which brings me to the next question…
Are there bad and good versions of the keto diet?
Absolutely! I call the bad version “junk keto” and the cleaner version “good keto.” A lot of people on the keto diet think its a high fat high protein diet with almost 0 carbs. Its not! It's a high fat, low carb adequate protein diet. It's all about balance and it's all about individualising an eating plan and lifestyle plan for you and you only.
Junk keto often consists of terribly processed chemicalised foods with questionable and potentially harmful ingredients.Wrapping fried bacon in cream cheese for dinner is definitely not 'good keto' - Just because its low carb doesn't necessarily make it a good keto food option.
Good keto consists of not making common keto mistakes like consuming nutrient void processed foods, over consuming protein and focusing on the wrong kinds of fats such as processed fats or way too much dairy.
This is why having a custom made eating and lifestyle plan is crucial for understanding a healthy successful keto journey.
A custom made keto eating plan, lifestyle plan and prescription supplements with education to provide you with correct overall information on ketosis - Thats keto for the win!
